The core is the most crucial component of any intercooler. It cools the charged air from the turbo before it enters the engine. The stock BMW tube and fin intercooler is built to support low boost levels and airflow, but when boost levels and airflow are increased, the OEM unit is easily overwhelmed and struggles to meet the cooling demands of a tuned engine running above stock boost levels. This leads to heat soak, resulting in power loss and a higher chance of pre-detonation at higher RPMs.
